Brutal Beating Allegations at Sing Sing Trigger Federal Investigation

Federal prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations of brutal beatings at the maximum-security Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York, Benjamin Weiser reports for the New York Times. During a search of the prison in November 2022, prisoners have alleged that corrections officers orchestrated a rash of beatings over multiple days, leading to a lawsuit by multiple men incarcerated in the prison and now, according to one of the lawyers on the suit, an investigation by the FBI and the Southern District of New York.

At least seven inmates were hospitalized and more than 20 others needed to go to the prison medical unit. The lawsuit, filed on Jan. 31 against the state, includes affidavits by 26 inmates in Sing Sing at the time alongside hospital records.
