Construction Contractor Convicted Of Homicide In Worker Death

An operator at a construction company has been convicted of criminally negligent homicide for his role in the death of construction laborer Luis Sánchez Almonte in New York on Thursday. These kinds of convictions are rare for workplace death cases, Claudia Irizarry Aponte reports for THE CITY. Jiaxi Liu will now face up to 16 years in prison. Foreperson Wilson Garcia has been convicted for criminal mischief. Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez called Almonte’s death a “preventable tragedy” and warned that contractors who cut corners at the cost of worker safety will face “serious and criminal repercussions.”
