Georgia Fugitive and Alleged Female Accomplice Face Federal Charges
An inmate who escaped a Georgia jail last month and the woman who allegedly helped him now face federal charges, Cara Tabachnik reports for CBS News. Johnifer Dernard Barnwell faces one count of escape from custody and Janecia Green faces one count of assisting escape of a person committed to custody.
Barnwell was arrested Sunday morning by the Bibb County Sheriff’s gang unit, the FBI, and their SWAT team after being on the lam for almost a month. Barnwell, who was being held at Bibbs County Jail awaiting his sentence after a federal narcotics conviction, was captured with “large amounts of drugs of trafficking quantity,” according to authorities. On October 16 along with three other male inmates, authorities say Barnwell climbed out of a damaged window in a day room and then fled through a cut fence. Authorities did not provide details about how Green assisted the escape. Both of the charges against Barnwell and Green carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
