Investigation Launches After Maryland Trooper Shot During Traffic Stop
A Maryland State Trooper was shot several times while conducting a traffic stop in Wicomico County yesterday evening according to a recent press release. The trooper, an 18-and-a-half-year veteran of the force, was transported to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and has since been released from the hospital and placed on administrative leave while an investigation is underway. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Keiford Lee Copper III of Trappe, Maryland and he is believed to have died at the scene following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two other occupants in the vehicle he was driving were taken into custody. A gun was recovered from inside the vehicle and further assistance was provided by local, state and federal law enforcement partners. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be sent to Wicomico County State’s Attorney for review along with a concurrent internal affairs investigation into how the incident unfolded.
