Justice Department Dishes Out Over $200M for State Crisis Intervention
The Justice Department will invest $231 million in 49 states, territories and the District of Columbia as part of its state crisis intervention program. Funding will go in part toward extreme risk protection order programs, or “Red Flag Laws,” that keep guns away from people deemed at risk of harm to themselves or others.
In addition, states may use the funds for other programs like drug, mental health and veterans’ treatment courts. The Justice Department encouraged states to create their own versions of extreme risk protection orders however and created a model for such laws in 2021.
