Maine Democrat Reverses Opposition to Assault Weapons Ban Following Mass Shooting
Following the mass shooting in Maine on Wednesday that left at least 18 people dead, Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has reversed his previous opposition to legislation largely backed by fellow Democrats that would prohibit assault weapons, Zoë Richards and Phil Helsel report for NBC News. Golden, who was one of five Democrats who voted against an assault weapons ban bill passed by the House last year, said he was wrong to oppose those measures and that his past reluctance to support such a ban stemmed in part from a desire to protect his family.
