Majority of Florida Prisons Lack Air Conditioning
75 percent of Florida prisons lack air conditioning, a situation made even worse by this summer’s record-breaking temperatures, Mitch Perry reports for the Florida Phoenix. In response, prisons have rolled out temporary solutions like authorizing inmates to be allowed to wear T-shirts and shorts, providing inmates with hydration packets and having medical staff educate inmates on heat illness prevention. The Florida Department of Corrections has also hired the global auditing firm of KPMG to review the air conditioning situation and, hopefully, also provide data on just how hot it actually is in a Florida prison cell, which is currently lacking. KPMG is expected to address lawmakers next month.
