Man Arrested with AR-15 Style Weapon Near Capitol Hill

U.S. Capitol Police announced that a man with a gun was arrested across from Washington D.C.’s Union Station on Capitol Hill Tuesday, Gina Cook and Mauricio Casillas report for NBC4 Washington. The suspect, 21-year-old Ahmir Lavon Merrell, of Atlanta, is a registered sex offender in Georgia, and was allegedly spotted walking around with a “long gun” in a nearby park. When officers found Merrell moments later and commanded him to drop the weapon, he did not comply and was Tasered. Medics took Merrell to a hospital in an ambulance and he’s expected to recover after the tasering, police said. Police say they still don’t know why he was there with a gun, which they described as a semi-automatic weapon resembling an AR-15.
