Senate Majority Leader Schumer Stresses Need for Criminal Justice Provisions in Marijuana Banking Bill

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, during a speech on legislative accomplishments, highlighted the importance of incorporating criminal justice reform provisions, including expungements, into the bipartisan marijuana banking bill known as the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, Kyle Jaeger reports for Marijuana Moment. Schumer expressed his commitment to adding equity-focused language to the bill, citing it as a “moral responsibility” for Congress to address the harms of the drug war. While the standalone bill moves through committee, Schumer aims to schedule a committee vote in the near future to discuss proposed additions. Other proposals like expanding financial protections for the cannabis industry and granting access to federal Small Business Administration services, have also been put forward.
