Study: Longer Time Spent in Pre-Trial Detention Leads to Longer Prison Sentences

According to a statistical analysis completed by the nonprofit Lehigh Valley Justice Institute, found that 53 percent of defendants who didn’t spend pre-trial time in prison were spared any prison time after their trial or plea and that only 12 percent of defendants who spent as little as one day in prison were spared prison, Rudy Miller reports for LeHigh Valley Live. The institute looked at court case data from 2017-2021. It advocates for bail clemency so low-level offenders aren’t unduly punished while awaiting disposition of their cases.
